Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai e!
Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai are recognised as the ahi kā, mana whenua and kaitiaki from Kukutauaki to Whareroa with overlapping interests with Ngāti Toa Rangatira to Paripari.
Ngā uri o Te Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai comprise of all who descend from Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Tama, Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Maru Wharanui and who remained living in Waikanae after 1848.
Since 2005, Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai Charitable Trust has been the mandated authority to represent the interests of Ngā Uri o Te Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai in all political, social, cultural, economic and environmental kaupapa.
Our interests stretch from Kukutauaki to Whareroa (seaward) to Pukemore and to Maunganui northward tio Kapakapanui and Pukeatua to Ngawhakangutu, then westward to Kukutauaki.
Whakarongotai Marae
Whakarongotai Marae holds a special significance for Ātiawa ki Kāpiti. It is our only remaining marae and has been the focal point for our iwi activities since the early 1880’s.
Whakarongotai Marae is currently administered by the Waikanae Marae Reservation Trustees. The Trustees responsibilities are guided by Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 and their marae charter.
