NOTICE OF RĀHUI ON THE USE OF SOCK NETS FOR WHITEBAITING
Notice is hereby given that the Te Āti Awa ki Whakarongotai Charitable Trust Board, under the direction of the Kaumātua Council of Te Āti Awa ki Whakarongotai, has placed a rāhui on the use of sock nets for whitebaiting, meaning that the use of sock nets is now prohibited in all waterways from the Whareroa through to the Waimeha Stream. This includes the Waikanae River and Waimeha Stream. All whitebaiters should be seen using standard whitebait nets.
Te Āti Awa ki Whakarongotai Charitable Trust recognises the special value that whitebaiting has for the wider Kāpiti community and wish to ensure that whitebaiting can be enjoyed by all for generations to come. The Trust consider the use of sock nets an unsustainable method of fishing for whitebait that puts the future health of the fishery under significant threat.
Further to this, if any member of the public observes other prohibited practices, we encourage them to contact the Department of Conservation on their hotline 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468). We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable whitebaiting season.
